The Task-oriented Queries Benchmark (ToQB)

Task-oriented queries (e.g., one-shot queries to play videos, order food, or call a taxi) are crucial for assessing the quality of virtual assistants, chatbots, and other large language model (LLM)-based services. However, a standard benchmark for task-oriented queries is not yet available, as existing benchmarks in the relevant NLP (Natural Language Processing) fields have primarily focused on task-oriented dialogues. Thus, we present a new methodology for efficiently generating the Task-oriented Queries Benchmark (ToQB) using existing task-oriented dialogue datasets and an LLM service. Our methodology involves formulating the underlying NLP task to summarize the original intent of a speaker in each dialogue, detailing the key steps to perform the devised NLP task using an LLM service, and outlining a framework for automating a major part of the benchmark generation process. Through a case study encompassing three domains (i.e., two single-task domains and one multi-task domain), we demonstrate how to customize the LLM prompts (e.g., omitting system utterances or speaker labels) for those three domains and characterize the generated task-oriented queries. The generated ToQB dataset is made available to the public. We further discuss new domains that can be added to ToQB by community contributors and its practical applications.


CAUSE: Counterfactual Assessment of User Satisfaction Estimation in Task-Oriented Dialogue Systems

An important unexplored aspect in previous work on user satisfaction estimation for Task-Oriented Dialogue (TOD) systems is their evaluation in terms of robustness for the identification of user dissatisfaction: current benchmarks for user satisfaction estimation in TOD systems are highly skewed towards dialogues for which the user is satisfied. The effect of having a more balanced set of satisfaction labels on performance is unknown. However, balancing the data with more dissatisfactory dialogue samples requires further data collection and human annotation, which is costly and time-consuming. In this work, we leverage large language models (LLMs) and unlock their ability to generate satisfaction-aware counterfactual dialogues to augment the set of original dialogues of a test collection. We gather human annotations to ensure the reliability of the generated samples. We evaluate two open-source LLMs as user satisfaction estimators on our augmented collection against state-of-the-art fine-tuned models. Our experiments show that when used as few-shot user satisfaction estimators, open-source LLMs show higher robustness to the increase in the number of dissatisfaction labels in the test collection than the fine-tuned state-of-the-art models. Our results shed light on the need for data augmentation approaches for user satisfaction estimation in TOD systems. We release our aligned counterfactual dialogues, which are curated by human annotation, to facilitate further research on this topic.


Learning from Emotions, Demographic Information and Implicit User Feedback in Task-Oriented Document-Grounded Dialogues

The success of task-oriented and document-grounded dialogue systems depends on users accepting and enjoying using them. To achieve this, recently published work in the field of Human-Computer Interaction suggests that the combination of considering demographic information, user emotions and learning from the implicit feedback in their utterances, is particularly important. However, these findings have not yet been transferred to the field of Natural Language Processing, where these data are primarily studied separately. Accordingly, no sufficiently annotated dataset is available. To address this gap, we introduce FEDI, the first English dialogue dataset for task-oriented document-grounded dialogues annotated with demographic information, user emotions and implicit feedback. Our experiments with FLAN-T5, GPT-2 and LLaMA-2 show that these data have the potential to improve task completion and the factual consistency of the generated responses and user acceptance.


Learning From Free-Text Human Feedback -- Collect New Datasets Or Extend Existing Ones?

Learning from free-text human feedback is essential for dialog systems, but annotated data is scarce and usually covers only a small fraction of error types known in conversational AI. Instead of collecting and annotating new datasets from scratch, recent advances in synthetic dialog generation could be used to augment existing dialog datasets with the necessary annotations. However, to assess the feasibility of such an effort, it is important to know the types and frequency of free-text human feedback included in these datasets. In this work, we investigate this question for a variety of commonly used dialog datasets, including MultiWoZ, SGD, BABI, PersonaChat, Wizards-of-Wikipedia, and the human-bot split of the Self-Feeding Chatbot. Using our observations, we derive new taxonomies for the annotation of free-text human feedback in dialogs and investigate the impact of including such data in response generation for three SOTA language generation models, including GPT-2, LLAMA, and Flan-T5. Our findings provide new insights into the composition of the datasets examined, including error types, user response types, and the relations between them.


Adaptive Natural Language Generation for Task-oriented Dialogue via Reinforcement Learning

When a natural language generation (NLG) component is implemented in a real-world task-oriented dialogue system, it is necessary to generate not only natural utterances as learned on training data but also utterances adapted to the dialogue environment (e.g., noise from environmental sounds) and the user (e.g., users with low levels of understanding ability). Inspired by recent advances in reinforcement learning (RL) for language generation tasks, we propose ANTOR, a method for Adaptive Natural language generation for Task-Oriented dialogue via Reinforcement learning. In ANTOR, a natural language understanding (NLU) module, which corresponds to the user's understanding of system utterances, is incorporated into the objective function of RL. If the NLG's intentions are correctly conveyed to the NLU, which understands a system's utterances, the NLG is given a positive reward. We conducted experiments on the MultiWOZ dataset, and we confirmed that ANTOR could generate adaptive utterances against speech recognition errors and the different vocabulary levels of users.


Multimodal Interactions Using Pretrained Unimodal Models for SIMMC 2.0

This paper presents our work on the Situated Interactive MultiModal Conversations 2.0 challenge held at Dialog State Tracking Challenge 10. SIMMC 2.0 includes 4 subtasks, and we introduce our multimodal approaches for the subtask \#1, \#2 and the generation of subtask \#4. SIMMC 2.0 dataset is a multimodal dataset containing image and text information, which is more challenging than the problem of only text-based conversations because it must be solved by understanding the relationship between image and text. Therefore, since there is a limit to solving only text models such as BERT or GPT2, we propose a multimodal model combining image and text. We first pretrain the multimodal model to understand the relationship between image and text, then finetune our model for each task. We achieve the 3rd best performance in subtask \#1, \#2 and a runner-up in the generation of subtask \#4. The source code is available at https://github.com/rungjoo/simmc2.0.


Generalizable and Explainable Dialogue Generation via Explicit Action Learning

Response generation for task-oriented dialogues implicitly optimizes two objectives at the same time: task completion and language quality. Conditioned response generation serves as an effective approach to separately and better optimize these two objectives. Such an approach relies on system action annotations which are expensive to obtain. To alleviate the need of action annotations, latent action learning is introduced to map each utterance to a latent representation. However, this approach is prone to over-dependence on the training data, and the generalization capability is thus restricted. To address this issue, we propose to learn natural language actions that represent utterances as a span of words. This explicit action representation promotes generalization via the compositional structure of language. It also enables an explainable generation process. Our proposed unsupervised approach learns a memory component to summarize system utterances into a short span of words. To further promote a compact action representation, we propose an auxiliary task that restores state annotations as the summarized dialogue context using the memory component. Our proposed approach outperforms latent action baselines on MultiWOZ, a benchmark multi-domain dataset.


A Fast and Robust BERT-based Dialogue State Tracker for Schema-Guided Dialogue Dataset

Dialog State Tracking (DST) is one of the most crucial modules for goal-oriented dialogue systems. In this paper, we introduce FastSGT (Fast Schema Guided Tracker), a fast and robust BERT-based model for state tracking in goal-oriented dialogue systems. The proposed model is designed for the Schema-Guided Dialogue (SGD) dataset which contains natural language descriptions for all the entities including user intents, services, and slots. The model incorporates two carry-over procedures for handling the extraction of the values not explicitly mentioned in the current user utterance. It also uses multi-head attention projections in some of the decoders to have a better modelling of the encoder outputs. In the conducted experiments we compared FastSGT to the baseline model for the SGD dataset. Our model keeps the efficiency in terms of computational and memory consumption while improving the accuracy significantly. Additionally, we present ablation studies measuring the impact of different parts of the model on its performance. We also show the effectiveness of data augmentation for improving the accuracy without increasing the amount of computational resources.


Modelling Hierarchical Structure between Dialogue Policy and Natural Language Generator with Option Framework for Task-oriented Dialogue System

Designing task-oriented dialogue systems is a challenging research topic, since it needs not only to generate utterances fulfilling user requests but also to guarantee the comprehensibility. Many previous works trained end-to-end (E2E) models with supervised learning (SL), however, the bias in annotated system utterances remains as a bottleneck. Reinforcement learning (RL) deals with the problem through using non-differentiable evaluation metrics (e.g., the success rate) as rewards. Nonetheless, existing works with RL showed that the comprehensibility of generated system utterances could be corrupted when improving the performance on fulfilling user requests. In our work, we (1) propose modelling the hierarchical structure between dialogue policy and natural language generator (NLG) with the option framework, called HDNO; (2) train HDNO with hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL), as well as suggest alternating updates between dialogue policy and NLG during HRL inspired by fictitious play, to preserve the comprehensibility of generated system utterances while improving fulfilling user requests; and (3) propose using a discriminator modelled with language models as an additional reward to further improve the comprehensibility. We test HDNO on MultiWoz 2.0 and MultiWoz 2.1, the datasets on multi-domain dialogues, in comparison with word-level E2E model trained with RL, LaRL and HDSA, showing a significant improvement on the total performance evaluated with automatic metrics.


Hierarchical Context Enhanced Multi-Domain Dialogue System for Multi-domain Task Completion

Task 1 of the DSTC8-track1 challenge aims to develop an end-to-end multi-domain dialogue system to accomplish complex users' goals under tourist information desk settings. This paper describes our submitted solution, Hierarchical Context Enhanced Dialogue System (HCEDS), for this task. The main motivation of our system is to comprehensively explore the potential of hierarchical context for sufficiently understanding complex dialogues. More specifically, we apply BERT to capture token-level information and employ the attention mechanism to capture sentence-level information. The results listed in the leaderboard show that our system achieves first place in automatic evaluation and the second place in human evaluation.
